The other day, my New Orleans tenth graders tackled Julius Caesar’s death and its aftermath…specifically, the funeral speeches of Brutus, and then Mark Antony. To top off the lesson, the assignment was to rewrite/paraphrase Mark Antony’s famous “Friends, Romans, countrymen…lend me your ears” classic into contemporary English (all 37 lines!) One young man, perplexed, mulled over the assignment, and the text of the speech, then called me over to clarify:
“So, Mr. Lucker, we just rewrite the speech from Elizabetharian to Commentarian”?
